# Is There a Verizon Outage in My Area?
Verizon Wireless customers across multiple U.S. states experienced a significant service disruption on Wednesday afternoon, with wireless voice and data services affected in numerous regions. The outage began around 10 a.m. on Wednesday and impacted users in at least 11 states, including Florida, North Carolina, Nevada, Utah, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington State, New York, New Jersey, Texas, and California.
The disruption was widespread enough that it affected nearly all parts of Verizon’s cellular service in the areas covered. Major cities reporting service interruptions included New York City, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte, Dallas, and the Bay Area. According to outage tracking data, approximately 70 percent of affected customers were struggling with cellphone service, and reports on Downdetector peaked at over 90,000 complaints from frustrated users.
One of the most noticeable signs of the outage was that many customers saw “SOS” displayed on their phones instead of the usual network bars. This indicator typically means the device cannot connect to the cellular network and is attempting to use satellite connectivity, a feature available on newer smartphones like the iPhone. Users reported being unable to make or receive calls for extended periods, with some stuck in SOS mode for over thirty minutes. Interestingly, FaceTime and other internet-based services continued to work for some users during the outage.
The outage created serious concerns in some areas. In Washington D.C., the official alert system issued a notification warning that the Verizon outage was hindering users’ ability to contact 911 emergency services. The alert advised residents that if they could not connect using a Verizon device, they should try using a device from another carrier, a landline, or visit a police district or fire station to report emergencies.
Verizon acknowledged the problem in a mid-afternoon statement, saying the company was aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers. The company stated that engineers were engaged and working to identify and solve the issue quickly, and apologized for the inconvenience. However, Verizon did not provide an official restoration time for when services would be fully restored.
Interestingly, customers using Visible, which is Verizon’s mobile virtual network operator that uses Verizon’s network infrastructure, reported that they were not experiencing any outages during this time. This suggested the issue was specific to Verizon’s direct service rather than affecting all carriers using its network.
If you experienced service issues during this outage, you could try several troubleshooting steps. These included verifying your cellular connection by checking the Control Center on your iPhone, where you could toggle Cellular Data on and off. Restarting your iPhone was also recommended as a basic troubleshooting measure. Users were advised to monitor Verizon’s official updates, Downdetector reports, and Verizon’s social media channels for real-time information about service restoration.
